At the United Nations, during the ongoing Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference, a “NGO session” was held on May 1. Rev. Masamichi Kamiya, Senior Advisor of ACRP and member of the WCRP Japan Committee’s “Stop! Nuclear Dependence” Task Force, attended the session and delivered a statement on behalf of the global network of Religions for Peace.

In his statement, Rev. Kamiya emphasized that a society built on the principles of power and destruction can neither be just nor inclusive. He further stated that the possession of nuclear weapons, and the policies that sustain them, are fundamentally incompatible with the moral foundations of human dignity.
He also underscored that the process toward the total abolition of nuclear weapons must place trust at its center. He called for building a future rooted in multilateralism and international law, grounded in peace, justice, and shared security.
Concluding his remarks, he issued a strong appeal: “Before nuclear arms race ends humanity, humanity must end the nuclear arms race.” He also affirmed the continued commitment of the world’s religious communities to work together to eliminate the threat of nuclear weapons.
