We are deeply saddened by the news of the devastating earthquake of over magnitude 7 that struck northwestern Venezuela on June 24 (local time). As of June 29, reports indicate that at least 1,719 people have lost their lives, more than 20,000 people have been affected, over 5,000 have been injured, and the safety and whereabouts of more than 47,000 people remain unconfirmed.

Since the earthquake struck, more than 600 aftershocks have continued to shake the region. We can only imagine the immense suffering, grief, fear, and uncertainty being endured by the people in the affected areas. On behalf of Religions for Peace Japan, I offer my deepest condolences to those who lost their lives and to their grieving families.

We pray for the swift rescue of the more than 47,000 people whose safety and whereabouts have yet to be confirmed. We also extend our heartfelt sympathy to all those who have been injured and pray for their full and speedy recovery.

Furthermore, we pray for the safety of the more than 20,000 rescue workers and search teams who continue their tireless efforts to save lives and locate those still missing.

Together with Religions for Peace Venezuela and our global religious network, we express our heartfelt prayers and solidarity, hoping that all those affected by this disaster may regain peace, comfort, and security as soon as possible.
